Major changes to workplace legislation.
The Federal Government's
major changes to Australia's system of workplace regulation (called
"Workchoices") has now
passed through Parliament and is law.
Redundancy severance pay provisions
for many employees working in workplaces with less than 15 employees
were removed in December 2005.
The date that the main changes took effect
is Monday 27/3/2006.
From that date, all
employees of companies come under federal industrial
jurisdiction. State
employment law and awards will only apply to unincorporated employers
(for example, small businesses such as the local shop keeper who has
not established a company
to employ employees). Complex transitional provisions apply.
Many other major changes
will be in force from that date. A summary, prepared by the federal
government, of the changes can be read at www.workchoices.gov.au
Working Today is
continually updating
this site to reflect the new, complex
system.
